    MS-Excel Quick Tip 1


    • Microsoft Excel is a full-featured electronic spreadsheet program.
    • First spreadsheet application is VisiCalc.
    • Excel is used for accounting and auditing. It is also useful for making reports using information and chart.
    • By default, there are 3 sheets while opening excel program.
    • Maximum length of cell content is 32,000 characters.
    • Workbook is a collection of different styles of sheets.
    • Worksheet is a primary document that your use in excel to store and work with data.
    • Worksheet is also called a spreadsheet. It is made up of rows, columns, and cells.
    • Rows run horizontally across the worksheet and range from 1 to 1048576.
    • A row is identified by the number that is on left side of the row, from where the row originates.
    • Columns run vertically downward across the worksheet and ranges from A to XFD - 1 to 16384.
    • There are 65,536 rows in MS-Excel 2003 and 1048576 in ms excel 2007.
    • A column is identified by a column header that is on the top of the column, from where the column originates.
    • There are 256 columns on MS-Excel 2003 and 16,384 columns on MS-Excel 2007.
    • A cell is the intersection of a row and column.
    • Cells are small boxes in the worksheet where we enter data. It is identified by row number and column header such as A1, A2.
    • Range specifies the first and last cell in a row, column or rectangular area.
    • C3, where C indicates the column heading and 3 indicates the row heading or number.
    • .xls and .xlsx are extensions of MS-Excel 2003 and 2007 respectively.
    • Template is a workbook that you create and use as the basis for other similar workbooks. The default template for workbook is called book.xlt.
    • The default template for worksheet is called sheet.xlt.
    • Formula bar is a section in Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheet applications. It shows the contents of the current cell and allows you to create and view formulas.
    • To enter data into cell, click on the cell and type your data from the keyboard. Entered data (content) will be displayed on formula bar.
    • To edit content, double click on the cell or press F2 key from the keyboard or select the cell and click on input box of formula bar.
    • Excel data types are value, label, formula and date and time.
    • Label is not used for calculation by default, label always appears on left align.
    • A numeric value can be treated as label value is apostrophe (') precedes it.
    • AND, OR, NOT are logical operators.
    • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are mathematical operations.
    • <, >, =, <=, >= etc. are comparison/relational operators.
    • Ampersand (&) is a text/concatenation operator. It is used to join, or concatenate text string.
